How to wire Ethernet Cables

Best advice I can give you is to not splice ethernet cables. you are asking for problems and unreliable behavior.

It sounds like you are not using standard cat 5 cable, as such, it may or may not work correctly at all.

There is a reason that the wire pairs are twisted in a certain fashion, and if you go too far out of spec, your ethernet connection will not work properly.

Amateur cablers think that as long as you have conductivity between the ends in the right position, you are okay. This is far from the truth. This might work at 10Mb/Half Duplex, but even at that speed, if wired incorrectly, you will get crosstalk or signal loss which will cause errors on the wire and slow down your connection considerably. The amount of twists per foot can vary between the pairs, and the amount of twists throughout the cable among the pairs can vary. The color standards are not simply guidelines, they are rules.

To avoid this in the future, there is an 89 cent cat 5 jumper with 2 female ends that lets you plug two cable together. Radio shack carries them.

You choose as long as you preserve continuity the color doesn't matter there are several standards but they are just that standards so you do not have to think and remember several combinations that you may use depending on your mood. so remember if you match pink with gray always match pink and gray in the future
