When I was in school, it was a 20 mile walk, uphill both ways, through the burnings sands and freezing sleet with barbed wire wrapped around my bare feet for traction. I had to carry steel "I" beams one direction and oak logs the other.

But I was lucky.

My dad had a real rough hike to school when he was a lad.

How about you?

It almost sounds like you went to the same school as my dad, but what you described was just his walk to the bus stop.....

I rode the bus when we started a new school 5 miles away.. or sometimes I rode my bicycle (because I ran track and would have to walk home after)...

We currently drive our children less than a mile to school.. not to pamper them but because between our house and the school there are at least 5 known sex offenders.

I don't walk to school. My dad gives me a ride there. Then I walk back home. It's not far at all.
