Does 10w30 mean that the oil is a 10 weight when the engine is cold and then it goes up to 30 weight when it warms up?

The "10W" means that this oil can be pumped by your engine as cold as a single-grade 10 weight oil can be pumped. The 30 means that the viscosity of this multi-grade oil at 100°C (212°F) operating temperature corresponds to the viscosity of a single-grade 30 oil at same temperature.

That is basically what the numbers mean. That the oil will protect the engine like 10 weight oil when it’s cold but at high tempters it will protect the engine like 30 weight oil. All the W means is that the oil was tested in winter.

In it's simple form, yes... or in the summer, the oil is 30 weight and in the winter it is 10 weight.. Oil used to be one grade about 40 years ago, then they came out with multi-grade oils that did not have to be changed seasonally. One of the more used is now 5w30.

Yes, and the lower the number the thinner the oil is. So the best oil would be 5W30

exactly------ you should try amsoil it lasts up to 25,000 miles between changes
