It's a horrible, smelly job. One mistake and you would need new carpets. Pay someone who knows what they are doing.

Before you start, locate all the drain valves near each downstairs radiator and your boiler, find a piece of hose long enough to go outside. Locate the isolator for your header tank. Get some Central Heating Cleaner and Inhobitor from DIY store.
Switch off your boiler, isolate your header tank, and drain from each drain point in turn. Assuming you have alot of sludge in the system, its good at this point to remove each radiator and flush with a hosepipe. Big Tip.... when you remove each rad, ensure the bleed valve is closed, as you take it off turn rad upside down, aviods trail of dirty water.
Ensure the cone fittings are clean (scouring pad)Replace each radiator.
This has ensured most of the sludge is gone. Get a system cleaner (DIY Store) and run in system as per instructions. This will loosen any remaining sludge. Repeat a clean as before, remove each rad etc.
Now, VERY IMPORTANT.
Get some inhibitor (DIY store) add to empty header tank, fill system, bleed rads etc.
DO NOT miss the inhibitor...
Enjoy.

If its just the rads you remove the rad, take it outside and put a hose on one end, flush water through and it pushes the muck out the other end. Or you can have your whole system power flushed by a proffesional xxxxxxx

to do it properly you will need a special pump and quite a bit of knowledge you don't have ....you could just drain down the system and refill ..but most of the sludge will still remain .. honest its best to get the proper people in ..and they have the chemicals to remove the sludge and the chemicals to put back in when they refill
