I would say belief structure. (?)
Religious conservatives feel that the Bible teaches that homosexual behaviour is always a serious sin.
Allowing sexually active gays and lesbians to have their committed relationships recognized by the church would involve a drastic and unacceptable lowering of church standards. (?)
I'm tired of certain religious people harshly preaching against homosexuality, but saying nothing about sex before marriage or having children out of wedlock.
According to most religious texts, these three things are equally, "sinful" no one thing is above another (actually fornication and adultery are mentioned A LOT more than homosexuality in the Leviticus).
Also, calling homosexuality a sin is judging, and judging IS a sin.

They'll tell you that it threatens the institution of marriage. I've never been able to figure out how, if two gays live together down the street, that threatens my marriage though. I doubt if we're ever going to have gay marriage in this country though. Just too much opposition to calling gay relationships marriage. I DO think that civil unions will eventually be the law of the land, with every couple---gay or straight---getting a civil union license from the State and having all the benefits and responsibilities that accrue to that union.
Then, those who wanted to could go to a church or house of worship and get married. It would be up to the churches to decide who they wanted to marry and who they didn't, just as it is now. But married or not, all civil unions would benefit from the same rights and responsibilities; inheritance, joint-tax returns, hospital visitation, advanced health care directives, etc.
This is what is eventually going to happen. Otherwise, gays are denied the equal protection under the law that the Constitution guarantees to all law-abiding Americans.

Social Conservatives will believe homosexual marriage is destructive to the basis of society. It isn't, because marriage isn't the basis of society. People are not social creatures by default. They are, like all life on this planet, competitive in nature. Society is a tool of these competitive creatures who learned that there is strength in numbers, so society is not based in some 2000 year old mythology, but rather from a need to compete together in order to survive. Philosophically subjective terms like "good" and "evil" don't even enter into the equation. Those are terms written by politicians about historical events.
Religious Conservatives will believe homosexual marriages are destructive to their religious faith - and it is. It is because it goes directly against their belief in Objective Morality. Religious conservatives believe their God is the personification of good while the devil is the personification of evil. If they ever discovered that morality was subjective, which it always is, then their god and their devil would lose most, if not all, of its meaning and become irrelevant in society. And if their god doesn't exist, then there is a pretty good chance thir posthumous reward/penalty system (ie heaven and hell) doesn't exist either.

Our fore fathers should be SO dissatisfied in this united states of america in the adventure that they knew faith change into such an major component in determining if 2 those who love one yet another can get married. So i wager i am going to work out you in hell for the reason that those "Christians" deem our moves irrelevant! HA

Most religious people are hung up on not accepting the joy their bodies can bring them. Anything which brings intense pleasure is automatically classed as bad.
It's classed as bad, because preachers and churches want control of the supply of happiness/joy/pleasure.
God is the supplier of happiness/joy/pleasure: don't trust other makers their happiness/joy/pleasure is fake and hasn't got the bible bashing seal of approval.
That's why sex is disapproved of. Sex is for making babies not for fun.
Because two guys/two girls can't make babies their sex is disapproved of even more.
Alternatively: if two guys together can have so much fun together and me and my god-fearing wife don't, the gays must be wrong. Makes sense right!

Religious people don't oppose it. Christian churches have been performing gay marriages for 15 centuries, except for some short periods of bigotry. It is coming back.
Ever hear of Saints Sergios and Bacchus? They were married in a church.

Well, firstly it is against the scriptures of all religions.
One of the main reasons is because it threatens the basic foundation of society, the family structure, which is based on heterosexual, monogamous relationships.

Marriage is the institution that was invented and endorsed by God in the Garden of Eden. It was designed by God, as a life long commitment for one man and one woman.
Our bodies are created by Him and are formed for the coming together of a man and woman in the sexual unity of reproduction and marriage. Intercourse is not only for reproduction, it is also for enjoyment in the marriage.
