I have played violin. You need two arms unless you intend on playing the four notes you can play without using fingers, because you need one hand for the bow and one to hold and play notes with the other.

Yeah , i'd say loose arms probably make playing the violin a bit easier...

I don't think so, you use one hand hold the neck of the violin and its fingers to form the chords on the strings. The other is used to hold the bow, and play those strings.
There are I suppose some alternatives: the spoons; Jews harp; triangle (hung up); maracas; tambourine; drum; hand bell; half a piano; ditto organ; mouth organ? bugle; squeeze box (between his knees); xylophone; etc.
