There's no need to pound them. As long as the pegs are in a smaller proportion to the hole, they should slide in easily (you might even be able to fit more than one)

Get the right size pegs and you don't have to pound.

Bashing square pegs into round holes !!!
And what is more!
it is a vocation , i can well do without
It is hard work !

Several times in woodworking. I have used sq. pegs to attach trim and such on several chess/checker boards that I have built. It is an acceptable way to join wood both for looks and simplicity
