You're losing a lot of heat through your roof;
Your gutters aren't draining well;
So the melting water is backing up in the gutters and overflowing thus creating long icicles.

The solution is to insulate your attic with a good 12" of blown insulation or at least an R19 fiberglass bat;
Clean your gutters and downspout and make sure the water can drain out;
Use a broom to break down the icicles before they fall on your head or cause ice on the ground underneath them that causes you to fall and bruise your heinie.

...and I'll take +2 weather in Michigan, icicles and all, over hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and sink holes. Nothing would get me to live on the Gulf coast...save a free house with no taxes, utilities or mortgage bills the rest of my life...

It lacks insulation in certain areas of the attic. Warm air rises and when it hits the attic, it melts from underneath where the snow has accumulated - normally the water just drips down off the roof or gutters, but when it is so cold like this icicles form.

Heat is escaping from the roof and causing melting. Better insulation in the attic would stop this from happening. Try adding a whirly roof vent as well.
