I don't see the point in getting engaged so soon if your wedding date is so far way.
My husband and I got married after 116 days of dating (just under 4 months) so I can't judge anyone on what is too soon.

Despite how well a coupe may know each other, an engagement after only a year and a half is a little soon. However since you say it'll be a 4 year engagement or so, I suggest you wait for that time and not rush anything so you that you both get to know each other better. You wouldn't want to find out you married the wrong person when you're already married.

It's not too soon to get engaged, the nice thing about an engagement is, if the relationship goes bad, you can just break up. It would be too soon if you were getting married right away. I think the two of you sound very responsible, so be happy with your engagement, regardless what your friends have to say.
Congratulations.

Based on your statement. I don't think its too soon. I think you both should be commended for waiting until after you graduate and find jobs before marrying.
Not to rain on your parade, but during this time you might discover you dont want to marry each other. And you will appreciate the fact that you took this engagment period so serious.

I don't think 1 1/2 years is too soon. Although at your age I would give it 3 years.
