Hun, periods don't have to hurt there are a lot of things that affect your period and a lot of things you can do to prevent menstrual cramps and help lessen your menstrual flow – periods are only as good or as bad as you make them!
As you are 16 this is perfectly normal, in fact even for adult women this would be perfectly normal. As you are in your teens your body is still developing sexually and physically, this affects your periods as your hormones are constantly changing and doing strange new things to your body.
Imagine your body like a new factory starting up, at first some of the machinery works a little slower than the rest, some doesn't stay in rhythm and some does not work until everything else is working, but in the end it all starts working together and as it should – your reproductive system is very complex.
It's perfectly normal; don't expect your body to get into a regular menstrual cycle until you are a lot older, and take a look online at different information sites to learn more about your body, menstruation and ways of avoiding period pains.

Nothing is wrong with you. The slightest things can greatly affect your period. For instance, I was sick so I took tons of antibiotics and over the counter medicines and my period was 2 weeks late and I had a very light one. It can all depend on how stressed you've been, what you've been eating, if you've been working out...dont worry.

You should be fine. It is normal for your period to be irregular for a while. If it continues, or is bothersome I would definately make an appointment with your GYN to discuss this issue. Good luck!
