Anxiety is increased when too much emphasis is placed on the test. It is important to not teach a test but to teach strategies to take the test and make sure the students know the content in a concrete way. Many teachers add to test anxiety because they place so much emphasis on the actual test. First of all, I'd call it an "assessment" because that is a much less intimidating word and I'd make sure as a teacher I had taught the content adequately and that I'd taught strategies to help my students with taking the test. I mean, what is this test in the big scheme of things?

I recently heard of an interesting experiment. Two groups of equally smart students (I think they were all girls, but I'm not sure) were given the same aptitude test. The first group was just given the test. The second group was told before they started that the test was really hard. The second group did significantly worse than the first! Interesting, eh?
