You'll be stunned. The overwhelming majority of federal income taxes are paid by the very highest income earners. The top 1% of income earners pay about 32% of all income taxes. The top 5% pays 51.4%. The top 10% of high income earners, pay 63.5%. The top 20% of income earners pays 78% of all federal income taxes. The top 20%.

Here's the final number. The bottom four-fifths, 80% - the bottom 80% of income earners pay just 20%.

The bottom 80% pay only 20% of the burden.

I'm NOT stunned; this country's tax regime has been headed in this direction for over 20 years now.

50% of people earning money pay NO TAXES AT ALL!!!

It's crazy - what kind of investment do people who pay no taxes have in our system, I'd like to know?!?

New York , California , Democratic Sates pay the most taxes in the country and get the least amount of services back. Democratic States by a wide majority. A lot of republicans are living in Alabama and Mississippi and Georgia living in there trailer parks, not paying much tax on their public assistance. Just because you make a good income does not mean you are some evangelical Republican freak.

Funny that you're equating wealth to political party... Isn't Bill Gates, one of the wealthiest men in the world, a Democrat? How about all the multi-million income-earning movie stars who are Democrats?? How about all the huge Environmental Companies who tout liberal agenda and support the Democrat Party's candidates? Get real.. if you think the Dem's have any fewer mega-wealthy on their side of the fence than the Rep's do, you're dreaming.

To believe that "wealthy" equals "Republican" is just naive... and an idea pushed by the liberal media... who want the masses of uninformed to believe that the Republicans are the "bad guys" who keep them down on their luck...

It's just spin! Do the homework yourself...

What proof do you have that that percentage of workers are republicans? Many wealthy people are actually liberal so you're full of SH*T, also those who reap the greatest advantage should pay more

Fast eddie states "what kind of investment do people who pay no taxes have in our system, I'd like to know?!? " It's called sweat equity nimrod while they bust thier asses the CEO is paid 400 times what they earn even when they fail at thier jobs as was recently shown @Home Depot, if a line worker screws up he gets the door not a Golden Parachute

Well, the answer is actually pretty obvious if you include the rest of the numbers.

The top 20% pay 80% of the taxes because they bring home over 80% of the income and have greater than 90% of the wealth.

Population figures are not the same as income figures.

Don't know where you are getting your numbers. But what you should be asking.... Why is it when the Democrats are in charge and when there is a Democratic president that all a sudden I pay more taxes every month from my paycheck and then when its that time of year income tax time. That I have to then pay more money! But when there is a Republican in office my tax's decrease and when income tax comes I get money back! Oh yeah I barely made $24.000 last year.

Your point is? The rich can afford to pay more - so they should. If the poor payed more in taxes then many would go from just about keeping their heads above water to below the breadline. What do you suggest they do? Starve? This would never happen to the rich - they'd go from being able to afford 5 cars to 4 - and what a terrible tragedy that wouldn't be.

And 90% of Republicans are in the bottom 80% of wage earners.

So what?

Your question is fallacious. What percentage of the total revenues do those top 5% receive? If it's more than 51.4% (and it is) then they're getting a great deal at our expense.

you also neglect the sales and gas taxes that eat up a much greater percentage of the earnings of the poor than of the wealthy.

Nice try, though.

Look at the democratic constituency groups: the poor, minorities, single-parent families, the elderly, and those people on welfare.

They don't work or they work at low-paying jobs, so therefore they don't pay as much in taxes as Republicans.
