Pakistan means land or home (stan) of the pakis. Pak is an acronym of Punjabi Afghani and Kasmiri and the stan was created by the partition of India at the end of the Raj when the muslims didn't want to be governed by Hindus.

No, but I have been called a Paki, even though I am not from Pakistan, and nor are any of my family. (I am English).
It is usually used as a derogatory term. It is not used like 'Aussie' or 'Brit': it is as often as not used to describe people who Appear to have a south-Asian background regardless of whether they have links with Pakistan or not, so how is it 'just an abbreviation'?
Bandying around the phrase 'political correctness' is a way of avoiding using your brain.

Well I'll say it wherever. There's no difference between calling a Pakistani a Paki and an Australian an Aussie. It's simple abbreviation, and perfectly acceptable.

We call Australians Aussies,Argentinians Argies, Americans Yanks, Scottish Jocks, we English are called poms limeys and every possible other name so I dont see any problem calling people from Pakistan Pakis. I am sure that most of them would take it without offence same as all the rest of us.
