Its never been said, though apparently there are clues in the episodes.
Almost every state in the U.S has a Springfield in it, but only 2 have a Shelbyville as well.

Springfield and Shelbyville are located in a fictional/nonexistent U.S. state. However, The Simpsons producer, David Silverman once unofficialy named the state as 'North Tacoma'.
Some people believe Springfield, Oregon to be the basis for the Springfield of the show, which, they argue, makes nearby Eugene, Oregon a basis for Shelbyville. Part of this suggestion is based on series creator Matt Groening having grown up in Portland, Oregon.

It is unknown what state The Simpsons live in. My guess would be either Illinois or Massachusetts.

Nobody knows because they havent told anyone!!! Its a running joke in the Simpsons, everytime they mention states or show where Springfield is on a map, the character is either distracted or someone blocks the map.

They don't live in any state. There was the episode where they said they in West Kentucky, but that isn't a state is it. There is a Springfield in every state so it is deliberate a red herring.

The producers chose the name Springfield because its the most popular name for a city.
There are clues but they always go nowhere. In one episode where Homer goes missing in the Springfield Oilfields, Lisa exclaims that they're five times the size of Texas. Texas is of course, the largest state.

As an addicted Simpsons fan, I know that they do NOT live in a state. There is no reason to debate it. The writers poke fun at this all the time. If you want the best explanation go here:

They don't really tell you because Springfield is supposed to represent basically any town in the U.S. That's why Matt Groening chose such a common name for the town.
