Tough and intense training, slightly easier than the army's.

My officer friend had an obstacle course that sounded like it was out of the Police Academy movie. he had a time limit to jump through a window, get around somewhere else...

You also learn about laws that govern you in your job (reading their rights, how to capture them, etc)

there are a lot of mental exams as well. Of course, it differs by state. If you ask your local academy, they'll be glad to answer your questions.
