this is what it says Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing

Follow the other answerer's response and check that the flat ribbon cables are well seated at the drive end and the motherboard end. (always turn off and unplug the PC before opening the case)

If you are able to eject the drive tray using the button on the front of the drive, then the power connection is working, if you can't even eject the drive tray, reseat the power connector on the back of the drive. If you are still unable to eject after confirming that the power is connected properly, you probably have a dead drive (or a bad power supply in which case you can try to use a different available power connector inside the computer).

Assuming you're using Windows XP, right click on My Computer and select Manage. In the management console that appears, click on Device Manager on the left, and then in the right pane, right click anywhere and select Scan for hardware changes. Your drive may be rediscovered and begin to work properly.

You can also attempt to restore your PC to a previous restore point in the Help & Support section of Windows XP.

Lastly, if you've recently installed any software, or hardware, or removed any, put it back the way it was uninstall the new software and see if it helps.

i agree with computerwizard145 but one another method ialso there to see in the My Computer Window that the CD/DVD icon is there if not then reboot your system and go to BiOS Setup and enter in the Advanced Settings and recognize the Devices connected to your computer by Just clicking ENTER key.if shows the CD disabled then open the cabinet and check the connector and bus for the CD drive and follow the steps for SETup

I would turn the PC off, open the case, and reseat the cable that plugs into the CD and follow it to the motherboard and reseat it there too.

Also got this once and a reboot fixed it.

CD/DVD's use a laser. It is possible that the laser is burned out. I had this happen to my first CD burner.
