My husband says its the one we call the 'saucepan' in the southern hemisphere but I thought it was in the north or is there more than one by that name?

The Big Dipper is part of the constellation Ursa Major and is in the northern hemisphere. You need to be north of 28° S. to see all of it. I think what you call the saucepan is part of Orion.

The Big Dipper is in the constellation Ursa Major in the northern hemisphere. The two stars at the end of the bowl can be extended to point at Polaris, the north pole star.
