I'm a second year undergrad student, and I'm thinking about changing my major. Anyone know what is involved in becoming a writer? What type of degree I would need? I would like to write for a magazine or journal, particularly ones that focus on political/social issues.

I'd imagine journalism, english, mass communications, political science, sociology might all lend themselves ... perhaps a major/minor? Dual major? Speak with your college's career counseling staff.
