It is a York Diamond 80 and after the pilots light, instead of coming on, it most of the time just has a loud humming noise. When it does come on it only lasts for few minutes and whirrs off.

The loud humming noise you are hearing sounds like your blower motor is bad. The bearings in the motor will go bad and the motor will come on for a short time until the bearings get hot then the blower will quit working. Some blower motors have places that you can oil the motor shaft and others are sealed and can't be oiled. If you can oil your motor it might make last for a while longer and then again it might not.

It is a good possibility the furnace has a dirty or defective flame sensor, if the flame is not sensed the pilot will go got after a trial for ignition period, if the flame is not sensed during combustion the gas valve will shut off as a safety so your furnace is not emitting unburned fuel which could become deadly, call a qualified heating contractor and have it inspected and repaired, there are other safety features on your furnace and your furnace contractor will make sure the furnace is working safe and efficiently

More than likely it sounds like you have a sensor problem. If it was the thermocoupler it should not even light. A bad thermostat can cause it to cycle on and off. It is hard to diagnose without actually checking it. Your best bet is to call a certified repairman to check it out. A lot of times this is cheaper than tring to replace parts to see what fixes it. Do check the filter first though if it is clogged up it can reduce airflow and stop the furnace from operating properly.

The humming noise you hear is the preignition fan/blower. In 2 stage furnaces, the prignition fan comes on so gas won't build up in case of non-ignition. Likely you have a bad flame sensor. They are cheap to replace. Call the repairman or if you kow someone handy, they can do it.

Possibly thermostat is bad. If it is coming on and not running long enough, I would bet this is it. Blower may not be kicking in too, therefore the loud humming noise.
One other possibility is the thermocoupler, although I doubt it would come on at all if it was bad.

Sounds like it's cycling or you have a draft. Unfortunately, this requires a repair person.

The easiest thing to do is check the filter. If it is ready for a new one, this could be the problem.
