So Mom and Dad are basically arguing that they are both great? Okay. Which is better: pizza or yellow?
Johnny Cash is better (in my opinion) as a vocalist - his rough voice and unique delivery allowed him to tell a story with every song; and allow the listener to feel that story. He took the song "Hurt" from Nine Inch Nails and owned it. And if you listen only to his last album, you can feel his pain and anguish without his wife, June Carter Cash.
Willie Nelson is a better musician and composer (again, in my opinion). If you really listen to his music, you will realize that Willie Nelson is quite an accomplished guitarist. And as proof as his prowess as a composer, one only has to mention a single song among the many hits he has written: Crazy.

Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson are both great.
One little thing, though, is that Willie's voice kind of gets irritating after...pretty much...the first song. He sings great, but the tonal quality limits are about 3 minutes. Then, I need to take a break.
I can listent to Johnny Cash much longer than that. Though, to be honest, I start feeling insecure about my manhood after about 30 minutes of listening to him. Wow, such a deep voice, what is wrong with ME?! Same when I listen to Russian men speak.
As far as what they have to say in their songs, I find Johnny Cash's songs much more interesting. They are either really fun (Boy Named Sue), socially aware, etc... Basically filled with deep passion. Willie's songs...welll...I don't really relate to "On the Road Again." "Old Yellow Line" (Which I heard sung by Dean Martin) can be interpreted as a metaphor for life, and "King of the Road" has very vivid imagery. But what goes on in "On the Road Again" is not really the experience of most people, none of the people I know, and I can't imagine a Vagabond's experience even being like that. "Always on my Mind" was sung a little to fast and hurried to be really "felt."
I'd have to go with Johnny Cash as being more "listen-able."
Willie is a great musician, though!

Johnny Cash because he has a wider appeal. You hear everyone from Rockstars to Rappers citing Johnny Cash as an influence. Nothing against Willie though. I think he is great too but out of the 2, Johnny Cash is better.

The man in black. He'd start things like farm aid to help farms. Not get out of debt. He was a man of his word. Made a terrible mistake as a pup, paid his price and lived a good life afterward and made some music that will life forever. Willie is known as why not to do to many drugs and is idolized by teenage boys for dancing really close to Jessica Simpson. Not to say he's not a good musician but compared to Johny, he's just an old man with a fried brain.

Johnny Cash, he's the man in black and awesome. Willie Nelson is good too but I can't stand the nasal signing and I can't stand to look at him.
