There is a multitude of reasons why the Himalayas have this effect. Too many to list here, but here a two. First, the rainwater and water from melting snow washes downs the mountains. On its way it pick up small deposits of minerals and deposits them in the valleys below. These minerals will enrich the soil. Secondly, the valley surrounding the Himalayas are protected in some degree by the mountains. This tends to have a moderating effect on the climate providing a much longer and conducive growing season. Search the net for more info.
