Both psychiatry and psychology require long years of schooling. To be a Clinical Psychologist, you will need to get your Ph.D. or Psy.D. in clinical psychology (there are only a very few places you can get licensed as a psychologist with a master's degree). After four years of undergrad, it usually takes 4-6 years to complete your doctorate and then, for clinical psychology, a one year interneship. So, you are probably looking at 10 or more years of schooling after high school. Salaries vary widely, depending on the setting, but for a licensed psychologist, salary wizard at CNN money gives a median salary of $78,000.

For psychiatry, you have the four years of medical school to get through after you finish your undergraduate degree. Then you do a residency in psychiatry. Those vary in length, but figure 2-5 years. So for psychiatry the training may take longer by a couple of years. The pay for psychiatry is a lot more. Again a lot of variability, but the median on salary wizard - $168,000.

The two careers are quite different - you might want to do some more research on each. Go to the American Psychiatric Association and American Psychological Association websites - http://www.apa.org/

there's lots there. And good luck!

I can tell you that it takes 12 years for a psychiatrist and 2 more to practice and train under another. Medical training as with any doctor, goes along with psychiatry. However, psychologists try to make it out of there with a Master's (6 years), but they are not MD's and cannot prescribe medication. It an uphill battle and takes more than thinking it would be "fun" because it's much more than anyone realizes at first. As for salary, it depends on the state and the style of practice or therapy. They all make a good living though. Good Luck!! @8-)

As your interest in psychiatry will include medicine, be sure and try to take advanced chemistry and biology while you can. Try to get some college credit out of the way. Accredited online courses may work now too depending upon your target college campus.
