Well, you could buy a CAT 5 Ethernet cable. That's one way. The other way is to add a WiFi router if your laptop has built-in Wifi. Otherwise, you would have to buy a WiFi adapter for your laptop too. You can get a combination pack at some of the electronic stores.
You hook up the router, then configure it with whatver security you want, then attach the laptop through the wireless connection.

Make sure your mom's WiFi router isn't encrypted, or else you will need some sort of ID to show that you are not an intruder. Also check if your WiFi card supports that router type (A, B, G or N), if not then you can't access it, if it is then your card should have found the access point and attempt a connection, if it doesn't then your card maybe defected.

You will need to install the software first from her CD Rom. I'm sure she has one. I have DSL from Qwest, and there is a CD rom and passwords that are required.
From there, the computer will auto-detect the network, and set you up.
If she doesn't have the software, you will probably want to call the help line, unless someone else provides a better way!
