what I am trying to say is if for example I have a dell computer can I use a hp or lexmark printer?
does the printer always have to be the same brand as the computer or can it differ?

You can have printer of another brand. All you have to do is attach the printer to your PC using LPT port of USB port (if it has this option) switch it on and then install its driver. I hope you have the CD of its driver. Insert it into your CD-ROM and run its setup. Follow the instructions that will guide you to the installation procedure. When installation is over you will be asked to print a test page so that you know your printer is installed and working properly.....

It does not have to be the same brand. Most printers do not make computers anyway. For example, there is no Lexmark computer system or Canon computer system. And vice versa, there is no Acer printer....so the makers of printers know that the printers have to be compatible with different computer systems.

It can differ. It is in the printer makers intrest (HP or Lexmarks in your example) to make it work with all different computer brands (Eg. Dell).

NO any printer will work with any computer providing the operating system is compatible with the printer. If you are using windows XP, that means that pretty much any printer on the market will work with your computer.
