Interesting question- I think that the affluence does play a role, if you have all your basic needs met, there is time to focus on the internal issues or deficiencies in interpersonal relationships, rather than just trying to survive. mus easier to sit around and lament when you are not infear of getting struck by a stay bullet in a drive by in fact talk therapy is supported by the "worried well" don't get me wrong, people can be depressed in all strata age ethnicity, etc. but not all are identified. however, the chemical imbalance per se doesn't really come true, because I have seen very few who actually tested ;positive for the chemical marker for depression although they were clearly depressed.

I love how people equate suburbs with money...
Suburban kids have a lot of reasons for the depression. Some of it is actually clinically depression. Others are trying to go with the fad of being miserable. Sometimes it's all kids know. If all they hear from their parents is negativity then that's how they are going to view life as they grow up.

They are depressed because they have bad, misguided and incompetent parents. They grow up wanting for nothing. They live in 5000+ square foot air conditioned McMansions with $10,000 backyard swingsets and never leave their room. I know this to be true.
One of my activities in addtion to camping, hiking and generally focused on outdoor activities is motorcycling. These new yuppiehoods have sprouted up all around me. One can cruise through these areas on a warm dry June morning and not see 1 kid playing outside. Ever. The sad little rugrats and curtain crawlers are brought up on a diet of MTV and video games. There is little or no outside human interaction. Suddenly, they finally overcome their parent's over-protection in their pathetic sheltered lives and discover things like dirt, mud, bad people, rain, and horror or horrors, there are real dangers out there!
EEEEgadss! Now they are allegic to everything because they have built up no immunity to grass clippings or mosquito bites, and are forced to make this sudden shift from a sheltered protected condom covered life to the planet that gives them life but presents dangers. They can't cope. Pop another Zoloft and stick that cellphone on your head and converse with a therapist for an hour or two. They aren't depressed, just confused and bewildered by the 3D reality of the world outside the home alarm system and side impact airbags in the Volvo.

Well it is a chemical imbalance which means it's not entirely up to the environment. And it could be genetic.
Plus the suburbs isn't all happy fun. We have drinking, abuse, drug abuse...
I'm not depressed, but I'm just saying...

They are just superficially depressed. It's some form of rebellion and teenage angst.
