The actual genre of emo(tive hardcore), came from hardcore punk. So it is punk.
But the bands considered emo today, arent actually emo. Theyre like you said, pop-punk or pop-rock. But theres 2 main reasons they probably consider emo to be punk..
1. The majority of kids that listen to pop have no clue what real punk sounds like, and they just assume pop-punk is punk. So when they hear these "emo" bands, they probably compare them to other pop-punk bands.
2. Ive heard so many kids put consider bands emo or punk based off the way they dress. Fashion doesnt determine genres!

Yeah I agree with you on that, bands like Fall Out Boy and such are often confused with being punk. I guess its cuz emo music originally came from punk and then derived into their own branch and totally own sound.
Oh but i just wanted to say, there´s pop music (for example: britney spears, jessica simpson, ect) and then there´s popular music (whatever music is most loved right now), and so i dont think that emo is just pop music with guitars, it is popular right now, but that doesnt make it "pop music", you know?...emo is just one of the many, many branches of rock.
Great bands there you mentioned by the way....Green Day is another really awesome band aswell.
Thanks for the interesting question. :)

lol. you make me laugh.
of course most people would agree that fall out boy isnt punk, and neither is mcr, but thats sort of an opinion thing. maybe you dont think you are fat(or skinny, or tall, or short, etc.), but somebody else does. it depends on the person and their point of view. And everyone is entitled to their opinion so i really dont see why you care about it so much.
edit: a lot of bands that are now considered emo to most people(afi, mcr, green day) were once NOT emo. their styles have changed, or maybe its just their fans that have, but either way... they can be put into more than one genre.

i'm emo/goth certain there's a huge difference and that i'm a mixture of both... My dad calls me emish, i'm waiting for that to seize on haha... Emos are tremendous the variety rocks alongside with the flavor in song and obviously emo is created through not person-friendly lives or pasts although, this does no longer recommend we are continually unhappy and depressed we do smile!!

emos not a fasion statement or the type of music u listen to. its a state of mind. so emo could be whatever they want to be. so not all emo ppl listen to fall out boy so i dont have ne idea how u can put emo and fall out boy not being punk music together.
