A bad neighborhood by chicago is East Chicago In Indiana That is all I know.

People get murdered in Lincoln Park, but it's considered a "nice" neighborhood. Common sense is required here as in all big cities. PARTS of the south side are dangerous as are PARTS of the west side, but I don't think you can make such sweeping statements as "The South Side is dangerous".
It also sadly depends on race. There are neighborhoods where certain ethnic groups would not be welcome -- e.g., I don't think I'd be caught after dark in Bridgeport if I were black. It has a rep for being white and racist, although more and more Asians are moving there (it's close to Chinatown). Likewise there are neighborhoods like Garfield Park that I would stand out.
What you want to look for is a middle class mixed race neighborhood to live in. If you're visiting I would exercise caution in any neighborhood. You can get mugged anywhere, reagardless of how "nice" the area is. A gang of 3 armed theives were recently targeting people in the Gold Coast area (they've been caught). Crime can happen anywhere.

Chicago is a big city, and like any big city you should use common sense wherever you go. People will tell you to avoid neighborhoods on the south or west sides, but a lot of that advice is from those who feel any neighborhood that isn't lily white is unsafe. The majority of Chicagoans are either Hispanic or black, and most people of every race are hard-working middle class people.

You can get killed or hurt in any place. More murders happen on the south side. robberys are more on west side, and rape is higher on the north side. Act with some common sense and you will be fine anywhere in the city. I have lived all over this city and have not had a single thing happen to me.

You'll be surprised... crime is EVERYWHERE. Not just on the "South or west sides". that kind of thinking is what gets people raped or killed.
