Some movies were filmed in color as early as the 1910's but it was expensive.

The first popular color movie was the wizard of Oz. The neat thing about it is that the first part was made in black and white. Then when Dorothy was on her way to OZ they happened to come out with a more affordable way to film in color at the same time so her Oz dream was done in color and the rest was in black and white.
Most other movies that are in color that were made before the Wizard of Oz were colorized with special tints in the 80's, like Casablanca.

Money--it cost a lot more to film in color.

Actually, the first film shown in color was a French silent film where each negative of the film was hand painted!
