it is just in an equation without graphing it out visually just mathematically in an equation

A quadratic in vertex form:

y = a(x - h) + k

is going to have a maximum when a is less than 0 (or, when a is negative).

It's going to have a minimum when a is positive.

well, you can use the equation to find the max and min, for instance if you didn't have a graphing calculator!
