Three red lights at the on button light up & console will not start.
Also if it starts the game freezes after 5-10 minutes. Is this a known fault because I have been told a Microsoft update has caused problems?

My son has just had the same problem. His X Box was 1 month out of guarantee. He phoned micro soft and they sent someone to collect it. It's been fixed free of charge. They were really quick in picking it up and returning it.

This is a widespread problem unfortunatley, It basically means your console has died and gone to heaven. Mine was dead for a week but i've been reading up on solutions and the one some people swear by is the "towel trick". Basically leave your 360 on for between 10 - 20 mins wrapped in a towel (I kid you not!) and then turn it off and reconnect all the wires (power supply AV cable etc). When you turn you console back on, hey presto, it should work!
Be warned though (as others no doubt will tell you) theres no telling if this may cause long term damage or if it will be a long term fix.
What i can say however is I have done this and it did work! I almost dropped dead because i couldn't believe it! So far i've been playing it on and off for the last couple of day's with no side effects.
Of course the safest option is just to get it replaced on the warrently though, but if your feeling lasy..............

Sounds like an overheating problem, if you play it for 10 minutes, it goes off because it's too hot, when you turn it back on it lights up red because it's too hot & does it as a built in feature the same as the xbox1 does. You need to buy an XCM external fan kit or if you've not got a guarantee anymore, open it up & install the talismoon whisper fan kit.

Alright well i bet you have a power issue going on. The red lights turn on mainly if there is something wrong with the power supply. But here check this out, it might help:

my xbox 360 has done this to me 3 times already and right now it is currently being repaired... if you call 1-800-4-my-xbox they will fix your console for free... at least they fixed mine for free
