Well i have always had a heavy period and abnormal one for that matter, But since having my son three years ago my period is very heavy to the point where even a super plus tampon wont stay put for more than 30 min, and well you can imagine nights are just awful, Any other women have this issue, and if so is there anything else out there to help me be more comfortable that time of the month... ... ( also, im on birth control, hoping it would help lighten my period but its done nothing)

Nothing embarrassing about it.

You may be suffering from Menorrhagia, this is categorised by losing excess amounts of blood or/and periods longer than 7 days. Having to change a tampon this often does show that you could have menorrhagia.

Heavy periods are often the result of an imbalance in your hormone levels, the imbalance is between estrogen and progesterone, often this can be solved by taking evening primrose oil or black cohosh to regulate your hormones, doctors can also prescribe hormonal treatment or run through all your options with you.

Hormonal birth control may very well be making the situation worse, furthermore it does not cure the problem at all at best it suppresses your cycles and thus simply covers up the problem or can make it even harder for your hormones to regulate if that is the problem. My doctor put me on the pill in my teens, long before I went into gynaecology and learned better, it did nothing to resolve my problem, in fact I once went three months of solid bleeding as heavy as you have described as a result of hormonal birth control.

It might be worth looking into fertility awareness method [FAM] to chart your cycles so you can see if there are any problems with your reproductive system, your doctor may want to run some tests and this will help him/her determine possible cause for your heavy periods. Even if this does not help you deal with heavy periods FAM is a great thing to learn, I'd recommend getting the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler or look at this web site - http://www.tcoyf.com

There are other causes of heavy periods, such as fibroids, polyps or vaginal infections, so it is important you talk to your doctor about this to seek tests and treatment if it is needed, something else that is important is to take iron supplements and improve your diet – this will not only improve your periods but help you keep your iron levels at normal so you don't end up as weak as a kitten.

My top tip for heavy periods is for you to stop using tampons!
Tampons are very bad for vaginal health as they prevent normal vaginal cleaning, give bacteria a place to multiply, cause vaginal splitting, leave fibres within the vagina and if you use commercial tampons such as Tampax the tampons will also be putting chemicals into your vagina. All these things are not only issues in general, but in your case as they result in an unhealthy vagina that means tampons can make your periods heavier as well as more painful if you suffer from cramping.

I would highly advise you switch to a menstrual cup not only are these safe and hygienic, unlike tampons but they are also environmentally friendly, body-positive, from ethical companies, inexpensive with money back guarantees to boot and more convenient. Menstrual cups can be worn for up to 12 hours safely without leaking, including worn for sports like swimming, at night when sleeping and before your period starts.

I myself have menorrhagia due to an estrogen-heavy uterus, I also have to use a IUD thus making my periods twice as heavy, if it was not for my menstrual cup (I use a Mooncup – have done for 4 years now) then I would not be able to leave the house because I'm even too heavy for the most absorbent tampons and pads. I love my menstrual cup; I promise you menstrual cups are FAR better than tampons for a number of reasons, particularly for people with heavy periods like us!

Improve your diet as this will help you as well, with menorrhagia as with any menstrual problem a change of diet can do a lot to improve the problem or prevent it all together, I'd recommend getting yourself to your local library to find some books on menstrual problems as they will help you find something to help.

Some basic tips are to improve your diet by eating a lot of whole grain foods, bananas, green leafy vegetables, root vegetables, and increase your intake of water.

Taking kelp tablets that you can get from your local health food store are good for heavy periods too and while there you may want to get yourself a good all round woman's blend tea containing vitex as this will help a lot too.

Having abnormally heavy or long periods is called menorrhagia. The underlying causes can be hormonal imbalances, fibroid tumors, an abnormal thyroid condition, an infection, ectopic pregnancy, or a number of other reasons.

About 20% of women suffer from menorrhagia. The most common reason is a hormonal imbalance.

If left untreated, heavy menstrual periods can cause additional health problems, such as anemia. The good news is that often the treatment and diagnosis of the underlying cause ends the abnormal periods.

Make an appointment with your ob/gyn. While waiting to see your doctor, read about abnormally heavy or long periods and the possible causes here: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/106869/possible_causes_of_heavy_menstrual.html

I'm guessing you haven't consulted a doctor about this yet. If not, you definitely should, if it's as bad as it seems. Not only because of discomfort, but health issues from losing so much blood.
It may seem like an embarrasing thing to talk about with a doctor, but trust me, he or she has seen worse, and they have probably seen your problem in a lot of other women. Plus, they can give you a much better solution than anyone here on Yahoo! ~ lol.

I'm guessing it's worse after your son's birth because you went 9-10 months without having a period. I've never been pregnant, but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of women have heavier-than-usual periods after birthing a child. However, since it's lasted years, there may be a serious problem. I'd call a doctor tomorrow, or as soon as possible, if I were you.

I would definitely go see your ob/gyn. It's not normal for a super plus tampon to need changed every 30 minutes. That must be so hard to deal with. If you see your doctor and tell him/her this, they can give you something to lessen the heaviness of your period. Also, there is a certain birth control pill they have now that only makes your body have a period 4 times a year...that might also be something to consider.

Have you seen your doctor for this problem? I had the same problems after having my 12 year old and after 2 years of testing, found out that I had adnomyosis and had to have a hysterectomy at 25. The other option was bleeding to death at some point in my life.

Sounds so familiar! I have tried many things, the three latest ideas form the specialist, are endometrial ablation (where they burn off the lining of the uterus, theoretically making it thinner thus lightening the menstrual flow, a marina iud, which onits low level hormones also designed to reduce flow or hysterectomy. As i dont want any more children and really dont want to continue like this for anoher decade or more, i am having a hysterectomy on wednesday! no more periods, yeehaa!!!

Heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) is a common problem for women. The worst cases of excessive menstrual bleeding can cause severe anemia and even require blood transfusions. Many women with milder forms needlessly allow their lives to be controlled by heavy menstrual bleeding because they are not aware of medical advances that often allow quick and easy treatment.
The cause of heavy bleeding can usually be determined in one or two office visits! Inaccurate diagnosis can lead to inappropriate treatment.
I hope this helps...good luck and stop being embarressed

You really should see a gynocologist reguarding your situation. I don't think it is normal for you to have that heavy of a period. Infact every time I go that is one of the questions my gyno asks me. Good luck and I hope this helps.
