I was wanting opinions on whether people think a Southern/Midwestern accent makes women seem dumb. I've typed a lot of essays for school and just to write, people read them, think they're great, but then when I talk to them for the first time all I hear is "What a cute accent! Do you live in the moutains? How is it in the South?" It's embarrassing. Should I try to change my accent so maybe I get taken more seriously? It's not horrible, but I do have a twang to my voice that people think is "cute". Thanks.

I guess I should mention I don't have a redneck accent, I pronounce all of my words correctly, but there is a twang at the end of my words that I can't get rid of (like Kyra Sedgewick on The Closer). I talked to a guy from California once, and after I was done, he asked me to give him a "Southern pageant wave". Embarrassing.

Nah, there are different types of Southern accents. Some sound very dignified and refined in my opinion.

Well, the rest of the nation believes that if you talk with a Southern Accent that you believe in God and therefore must be the dumbest human being on the face of the Earth.
The rest of the nation does not realize just exactly how idiotic they are. I called up to Minnesota one time to talk with a guy that I met overseas. His secretary took a message. She said, "Where are you calling from? I told her the state." She said, "Really?" I said, "Yes." "Oh, you must have grown up else where and moved there." I said, "No, I've lived here all my life."
She said, "You don't have an accent." I then did my best goober voice.. "I reckon I'm sapost to talk lik thais?" She started laughing and said, "Now, you sound like you come from the South."
I just shrugged it off. I said to myself, I guess this must be how other people feel when people make fun of them.

It really depends on where you are from. To other southerners..no..
to people from New England ..Yes
I think it was burt reynolds who said "When you tell somebody something, it depends on where you are standing in the United States as to just how dumb you are". Meaning regional dialects and knowledge will always determine your standing, so it's more then just the accent.
Granted that statement was made back in the '70's and even though the internet makes the world a smaller place there is still some relevance to that comment.
Be proud of who you are. People are more respectful of genuine people, and not people who fake it just to seek approval.

Wellll....conversing as a born and bred Southerner, I do ought to say I take exception to someone whose questioning is lazy adequate to think about me a lot less knowledgeable because of my drawl. the international should be robust boring if all and multiple spoke like the guy on the six o clock information, devoid of accent or regionalisms in any respect. Frankly, my expensive, maximum Southerners do not provide a damn what you imagine about their accent, and they are in all likelihood raised too in a well mannered thanks to allow you to already know off for making relaxing of them, or, to make relaxing of you for speaking in a special way.

I was born in Indiana, and now live in Alabama, so can relate to all of what you're saying. Although I still speak with a Hoosier accent, I adore the Southern accent. All accents are charming in their own way, and hey, we can't all speak British or French, can we! Just embrace yourself for who you are. I have. I went to college, and proved that I'm no dummy.

I don't think that an accent should affect the way that people see you. As long as your pronunciation is correct, there shouldn't be a problem. Most people who hold those kinds of stereotypes are idiots anyways, so I wouldn't worry about what they think. Also, to the person who mentioned Jessica Simpson, I don't think that her accent is the only problem there...

Yes no matter how smart you are well at least to me southern accents make people sound uneducated .But I Jessica Simpson put that in my head then slowly other blonde southern girls started following ( but it's just a stereotype that i actually believe)and hear .

I have sort of a southern accent as well. People all around me have southern accents. I don't think they sound uneducated, but maybe I'm just used to it.

I have a heavy southern accent. It is what makes me, me. I wouldn't change it for the world....but, you must do what makes you feel comfortable. However, I do not think that anybody thinks you are uneducated simply because of your accent. And if they do automatically assume you aren't as "smart", that is their ignorance showing...not yours.

Only to the untrained mind. I got friends that look sound and act redneck as hell! Like me! But they are doctors, surgeons, engineers, college teachers and were educated all over the world and did a lot of travel with the military. AND YES SOME OF THEM ARE GOOD IN BED! LOL
How do you circumcise a redneck? (I'm SO going to hell for this one!)
Kick his sister in the chin!
