I am trying to remove a virus from my mom's Windows XP machine. If I boot it normally, it blue screens a few seconds after Windows loads. It won't boot in Safe Mode. Is there anything else I can try?

The only way if it won't boot is to do as the other poster said, slave it in another computer. However are you sure it is a virus???? Sounds like possible hardware problem, overheating etc. The key to solving a blue screen is to look at what the error comes up on the blue screen and research that.

Good luck...

Knoppix is your answer. It is a bootable Linux CD, meaning it loads the entire OS from the CD thus leaving your harddrive and infected Windows untouched... Unless you direct it to do otherwise. You can update the virusscanner that comes with Knoppix and scan your HD with it to remove the virus.

I had the same problem two weeks ago when the situation got worse and it will I had to call geek squad but first make sure you have the original cd,s that came with the computer,I had to do a nondestructive systems recovery found in start>programs>pc help &tools .Geek squad helped me alot and it was all over the phone and they charged me 50.00 so be careful or you will end up starting from scratch.
