What is the difference between a laptop and a notepad/books computer?

Please can some one explain the differenc ebetween a laptop and a notepad/books computer or are they the same just different names.??

laptop and notebook= the same thing a tablet pc is a different thing altogeather although you can buy laptops with the tablet software
