An Ipod is a type of Mp3 player. Apple just deemed the name ipod. I have an ipod and it's great. I know friends who have mp3 players and they like them.
Analogy time!

Some IPods can show photos, play movies and videos, give you the possibility to play games. It even has a calendar and a clock on it!
They are a lot better, but also very expensive.
The technical difference is, though, that IPods play MPEG4 files whereas mp3 players, obviously, play mp3 files.

iPod is made by Apple and works like Mac computers.. you can only put iTunes onto it
MP3 player is more universal- more like a PC.. you can put mp3 or .wav or .wma (windows media player) files on it

An iPod can hold photos, play movies and videos, it has games on it, it has a clock, and you can keep notes and a calender on it! Ovrall an iPod is much better in my opinion, but they are really expensive.
