I have a Sony VAIO. For several years now. I'm afraid this is a sign of imminent harddisk failure. But it has been going on for months. I hear the click about once a week. Please advise.

Well usually with that noise continuing for that amount of time, it sounds like your hard disk is going bad.

A few things you can do to keep the computer going.

*Take some condense air and spray your computer vents.

*Running scandisk/defrag at this time would be impractical, but it wouldn't hurt.

Make sure if you haven't done so already, back up all of your files/data, by going to Star, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Files and Transfer Wizard, or just copy and past your files onto cdrom/floppy disk.

It sounds like a HDD problem. If the computer is not under warranty, you can buy another HDD and connect your failing one to a USB adapter to retreive the data. You should do this while you can still pull data off of the drive, so limit your use until you can get a replacement.
