Go to Tools, and then Options. Find the security tab and you should see a text box for a password to view the word document and another to be able to modify the document.

You should probably use the same password for both unless you are doing something weird (something other than just protecting your files).

Hope it helps!

When you go to save your file choose "File, Save As" then click on the "Tools" menu icon on the Save As Dialog box and click on "Security Options", put a password in the "Password to open" box and you are all set.
