avoid those in london..more expensive than hotels.
almost any in germany, austria and switzerland are good. in spain, italy and france, go for a cheap hotel instead.my favorites are in salzburg, gimmelwald switzerland (incredible views) and rothenburg ob der tauber, germany. enjoy!

If you make it to Scotland I have stayed in three (I am Scottish, 36, married and have kids but old backpacking habits die hard)

Carbisdale Castle in the Scottish Highlands was bequeathed to the YHA in about 1946. It's out of the way but quite something and the scenery is beautiful, The restaraunt is excellent value with a 4 course buffet dinner for £6 (roughly $15 - a bargain in the UK). Comes complete with a ghost and a haunted room which you can stay in if you really wanted.

Loch Lomond YHA was voted third top youth hostel in the world. About half hour drive from Glasgow with great views of the Loch. Again comes complete with ghost

And if you get to Scotland in the ski season (or any other time really - summer is gorgeous too) then the YHA in Aviemore in the heart of the highlands is modern and cosy with a fab kitchen and dining room, lounge with pool table and a 5 min walk to the pubs. New Year is great in Aviemore - much better than Edinburgh (don't believe the hype - in Edinburgh you'd be with massive crowds, in the rain, cold wind that goes right through you, and no chance of getting into the pubs)

Hope this helps and have fun with your travels
