You know, I had to translate a riddle that had to do with a "dinner party"... I understood what it is, but I couldn't find an exact translation... Thanks for your answers.

I have to agree with girl24gr.I haven't yet heard of anything similar in greek.I think that this kind of party includes dinner,right?It's the only thing I can come up with.Ok party in greek is used the same as in english..Except if party here stands for company.So here are two versions.Dinner party:1)Πάρτι δείπνου,2)Παρέα(=Company) δείπνου...What can I say?I find my answers quite funny.

Dinner=δείπνο
party=πάρτυ
But the two words together has no specific meaning in Greek!

There are many notions that are not translateable simply because they do not exist in another culture. In Greece where things are wonderfully disorganized and spontaneous, they did not have a need to create a dinner party. You simply invite people over to eat and it becomes, frequently enough, a feast to put to shame any "dinner parties" I have encountered in the Anglo-Saxon world.
