I have cable modem connection w/router to both pc's. Last week assume router went out as I could directly hook either pc direct to modem & connect. Borrowed another router. Ran for 4-5 days then same thing. Can I simple by-pass a router & hook both pc's into back of modem with a splitter of some kind?

You can install a second NIC into computer number one and connect directly to the modem and the second computer can connect to the first by using the Internet Connection Wizard. remember you will need to use crossover cables instead of patch cables.
You really need to find out what is dsabling your router. It could eventualy damage you modem or computers.

No. Dont try it. The two computer signals will have "collisions" into each other. Dont even think about it EXCEPT if you only have one computer online at a time, and even that may not be satisfactory for you are you may have to power cycle the cable modem when you change computers.

Cable providers usually lock the modem to one device at a time.
