What causes this? Is it poor installation or the window itself?

It's not poor installation! It actually dosen't have that much to do with your windows - it's the humidity of your house. The better the seal on your windows the more problems you will have with humidity because it has no where to escape to.

If you live in a cold area and you're running a ventless furnace you will have alot of issues when it gets really cold. It's because the furnace keeps pumping moisture into the air but the moisture has no where to go, so it forms up on the windows and then freezes. (Kind of like when you take a hot shower and the mirror collects moisture)

A short term solution would be to get a Dehumidifier but any good HVAC guy will tell you to get an air exchanger installed. It may cost a couple hundred bucks but the air quality in your house will be worth it.

Are these insulated glass windows? There should be no ice on the inside of an insulated...double or triple paned window. The only exception would be an interior that is not occupied and is perhaps under construction Freezing temperatures inside with a source of moisture could cause your problem. Call Pella. I suspect your installer . Did you get an unbelievably good deal?

It's poor installation. As long as the windows aren't misting between the panes, the windows are fine. If it's on the interior then you have a major insulation/seal/installation problem. Could be fixed with just a tube of caulk though.

If moisture is between glass panes then insulated glass seal is no good. Time for warranty action. If moisture is on inside of window where you can wipe it off then humidity in house is too high.Pella is an expensive brandname. They should stand behind their product.

If it's in between panes it is a faulty window seal.

If it is on the room side of the glass the humidity is too high in the house.
