I have been using the betas and Release Candidates for the last six months or so. There are some good things about Vista, but there are also some things I think should have been left out.

Benefits:

Aero Interface - makes it easier to see which windows are active, and the live preview function makes it easier to pick the right IE window or whatever application you have multiple instances of running.

Live Search - the ability to search from the start menu, as well as from any Explorer window, makes it easier to find the files and/or programs you are looking for. Also, the ability to add tags to files allows you to search by tags instead of file names. This can be very handy when dealing with a lot of digital photographs.

Dislikes:

User Account Control - while it is a good idea in theory, Microsoft should have seen how Linux builds and OS X apply such measures. Whereas other OSes only require such authentication when an action can cause problems with your system, UAC requires authentication for some of the most mundane actions. I disabled it for that very reason.

Digital Rights Management (DRM) - Microsoft had to cave in to the RIAA and MPAA on this one, so I can't entirely fault them on this. However, some of the DRM measures that have been implemented in Vista actually make it harder to enjoy media you have legitimately acquired. It gets worse when you begin to discuss HD-DVD and Blu-Ray media.

Direct X - Microsoft made the decision to only make Direct X 10 available in Vista, meaning that users of XP and prior operating systems will be left behind when DX10 games begin to be released. What makes things worse is that only a few videocards are even capable of running DX10 (nvidia's 8800 series).

Hardware requirements - this is one of the issues that has been raising a lot of eyebrows, because of the new HW requirements. Essentially, you need a system with 1GB RAM, 80GB HD, and a DirectX 9 videocard to run the full OS - including Aero.
