Nationalism. Across French controlled Europe, people were being oppressed. Napoleon's government was forcing French ideas, culture and values on conquered peoples. They were in essence being told that they were inferior to the French. Most people wanted to feel like they were members of a country, not just a subject of a king, or the property of a leader. The ideas of patriotism and nationalism are very visible in the current events of today, as well. For example, people of the Basque Country in northern Spain feel oppressed by the Spanish government and surges of nationalism are taking place across the country.
