MacIntosh (Apple) are more costly but better quality than PC's. Macs do not have near the problems with Viruses as Microsoft does.
I have had a Mac Laptop for some time, and it is very reliable.
I recommend it if your Mom can afford it. However, you will have some problems transfering information from the Apple to the more common Microsoft PC's.

A mac is only a wanna-be pc now (intel cpu, no bios, and forced to use os x -freebsd based linux). It is NOT a better computer (obviously) and just overpriced. OS x is easier to use (much harder if you used pcs-have to re-learn). Software for the mac is rare, the real pc is common. For the most options, software, and cheaper upgrading, it's a real pc hands down.

macbooks are great for everyday use. but if your mom likes games (i dont think she does) the graphics aren't that good. Macs are somewhat expensive but the OS is great for old/beginning users (maybe your mom is one). If you like windows, you can get that on the macbook AND dont forget to get one with a little bigger memory.
