Republicans have the basic concepts espoused by Alexander Hamilton. Democrats believe more like Thomas Jefferson.

Republicans tend to be more interested in international affairs where Democrats favor solving domestic issues.

Republicans borrow and spend while Democrats tax and spend. Either way we pay for it. Pay later or pay as you go.

Republicans believe that if rich people and big business are doing well the nation is doing well. Democrats tend to believe that if ordinary working people and the needy do well the nation is doing better. Since, in a democracy the majority rules one would think the Democrats would always prevail.

Over history the Republicans have had more scandals and more corrupt Presidents while the Democrats have had more incompetent Presidents.

While the Republicans tend to be more likely to favor a few basic ideas and principles the Democrats are often inundated with ideas and diversity.

Sometimes Republicans are intolerant while Democrats can be too tolerant of others.

If one looks at political parties around the world these differences are very small compared to other parties. While most people identify with one party or the other. Often they don't know why (maybe it is because their family has always favored that party) we usually tend to keep a balance in the USA that keeps things right up the middle. Compromise is the way it works.

All you have to do is read your responders answers to get an idea of republican versus democratic ideology. Both parties are corrupt and have their own personal agendas, but basically, republicans favor no government and no taxes - protect thyself even if it means screwing others to do so. Democrats believe that all people should reap the benefits of our once great nation, so they raise taxes to fund programs for the less fortunate and disabled. If there were no democrats, who would the Republicans bash to avoid talking about their own antisocial views, which are in opposition to the definition of a Democracy.

The basic difference is that Democrats believe that big government is the solution to the problem and Republicans believe that big Government is the problem.

Pipeliner: The new Republican philosophy is that in fact you have twice as much glass as you really need.

republicans supposedly do not like big government and support states rights and a strict interpretation of the constitution. they also are generally against welfare and taxes and are usually rich and owners of the big businesses and stock in corporations. but some poor ignorant people become republican for emotional reasons such as patriotism etc because they are easily tricked by the rich republican's ads on TV and distortions of the facts.

Democrats generally support the little guy and lower to middle classes and workers unions etc over the rich republicans that own big business. They favor government help for poor and social programs to help with education, health care and employment. They try to take the money from the rich and give to poor. Some are rich too but still care about the poor. they have human feelings, unlike the republicans.

Basic differences are simple Democrats want big government to control your life with programs like welfare and taxes. Republicans want smaller government with less taxes and states governing themselves. Now the facts: Both party representatives in DC have forgotten that.

I've tried both . The bribes required to buy the Democrats seem to be a bit lower( Guess cause they traditionally come from poorer backrounds) . Its time this country had a 3rd party , hopefully organized on a grass roots level . Once people realize neither party have the best interests of the people in mind.

The main distinguishing factors are populist v. globalist, and the parties aren't useful guides there. Republicans tend to be a bit more hawkish, Democrats tend to be a bit more socialist.

Republicans take action no matter the consequence and take responsibility...Democrats know what needs to be done but sit and argue about how to do it and blame everyone else when their plan fails. and when all else fails, bury their head in the sand thinking it will just go away...look at 911.

Hope this helps

More needs to be included in the question, because the traditional Republicans that my grandmother loved are hugely different from neocons.
