Don't encourage, but don't discourage, either.
I once had a dream to sing in coffeehouses, just me and my guitar. A friend of mine, one evening as I was singing and playing for him, just gently but honestly said, "you need a LOT more work and imporvement before you can do that". It didn't hurt me, it was the truth. I CAN sing.. but I can't play an instrument worth a darn!! And my singing will never get me anywhere ... my talents lie elsewhere.

So ... one of the ways you can help your friend out is by helping her discover where her real talents and gifting are!! Encourage her to try lots of things, and when you see something she does really well, encourage her in that!

If she mentions singing in public somewhere ... like karaoke or something, be honest and tell her you don't think she is ready for that. Then if she decides to anyway, go with her, be there for her when she falls. At least she can't come back and say to you "why did you let me".

P.S. --- I am now married to a professional musician, so I get my dream met vicariously .. and it works, LOL!!!

Be a friend. Don't let her waist her time on a pipe dream she'll never accomplish. Lovingly tell her the truth. Try to record her so that she can hear herself without telling her who she is listening to ask her what she thinks of the singer? If she agrees with you, it'll be that much easier to break the news to her. Good luck, but tell her some how soon, if you really do care for her.

she sounds just like my daughter and my husband, no matter where we are or who we are with they just love to sing. My daughter even had the nerve to tell me she wants to try out for American Idol......omg...She does not have a shy bone in her body and will sing in front of a large group of people or just 2-3 people, she just loves to sing. When we are at line in the grocery store she will break out into song and people normally just laugh at her and she laughs with them. We went to my nieces wedding and while we were eating she got the microphone and dedicated a song to them. "acapella." Everyone laughed. I can't take it so I tell her, look you cannot sing.....I'm not trying to destroy your dreams but you can't sing.........she said, mom, I know I can't sing but I love to do it so much and sometimes when I'm by myself-I really sound good and I laughed but I told her again.....no you never sound good but if you are doing it for fun okay but please don't try to be a singer.

You may just have to come out and tell her....she may surprise you with her response........if that doesn't work you should secretly tape her singing and let her hear it............good luck

just support her with singing. i know you don't want her to think she's good and then get up in front of a lot of people and sing cuz she'll stink. but as a friend you have to support her and you can't tell her she stinks at singing cuz she'll be offended. i hope this helped. good luck!

I've been there, you have my sympathy. Don't say a thing. Let someone else who is a professional in the industry tell her.

If you want to be passively nice, that's about as good as you can do. (Don't say, "Ya, you rock!" when you know it's BS.)

i think you should record her and have her listen to herself. And if htat doesn't work ask her to sing for her own family they will tell her the truth. And if you haven't said something already your not her friend.

American Idol auditions- let Simon tell her.
If you were a good friend, you'd tell her that perhaps with lessons, she could improve her voice.
