I am going to spend several months at a vacation home. I do my banking and bill pay via the internet. If I use a public computer (internet cafe) is the data I enter in danger of retrieval by others via hidden files in the computer? My bank requires password/private questions and item recognition as part of the log-in process.

I wouldn't use one. You don't have any idea what is on the computer. Someone could put a keystroke logger on it or anything else they would like to. It would be trivial to install a hardware keystroke logger that would be difficult to find. If you trust everyone that has used the computer then by all means use it otherwise I wouldn't use it for sensitive things.

If you can, speak with your utility companies and let them know you would like to prepay for a couple of months. Also, you may be able to bank by phone during your trip. I have bill pay at the ATM for my checking account, see if it is available to you also. A lot of cyber-cafes now have keyloggers (mainly for logging potentially terrorist activity so it can be properly traced), but not all, and you may never know.

Smart of you to ask instead of blindly trusting them!

Hi. I wouldn't use a public link personally, but if you must then make sure you have the strongest encryption (256) you can. There have been cases where data was taken from the SERVER, not just intercepted.
