I think I read this somewhere. I'm always telling people to have things valued for insurance purposes, but if this is true surely it can't be good for the jewellery can it?

No it is not taken apart. This would be very unwise to do. Pieces can be checked for authenticity without taking apart.

no they shouldnt pull it apart...usually they look for a hallmark that is stamped into some discreet place on your jewellery and then weigh it to give you an estimate....along with your receipt it should be ok for insurance papers....dont worry they wouldnt dare pull it apart! :)

if you are still worried about it take pictures of all the jewellery before and then after to see where the damage has occured and then SUE them!

but seriously, they wouldnt pull your jewellery apart....it would reduce the value of your jewellery!

A good jeweller will be able to tell without pulling it apart, i had a white gold ring i took to them to make sure it was as it was an engagement ring from dubia and he did a tiny test on it by pouring some substance on it, it did what it said on the tin, and was white gold ,,,,,,,,,,, phew

No, a really good jeweler doesn't take but a split second to spot a Faux anything. Now, if your talking about one of those jewelry stores at the mall (the chain stores). I wouldn't trust them. DeBeers would be my first choice.
