It seems its needed for life so where do they get it from?

Herbivores, such as deer and wild boars, find salt in salt licks that occur naturally around lakes, rivers, and seas. Carnivores, such as bears and lions get their salt from the meat that they eat. (Salt occurs naturally in red eat.)

Deer lick stones and some parts of the ground rich in minerals, rabbits i don't know.
