Why are humans sometimes petrified of going anywhere near or touching a tiny defenceless spider?

If you knew which ones bit, and which ones didn't, or which were poisonous and which were not, I don't think you would be as afraid of them.

Ever notice how those animal people on TV, with their tan hats and vests with lots of pockets, fearlessly stick their hands in glass cages with snakes and spiders? They are not afraid because they know the animals are not dangerous.

We are afraid because we are not sure.

Arachnophobia is defined as an inordinate fear of spiders. This phobia can often be triggered by the thought of or sometimes even a picture of a spider. A serious case of arachnophobia is much different than someone who doesn't like spiders. Many people who are afraid of spiders have feelings of panic entering into a situation where spiders may be present.

This fear of spiders can dictate where someone chooses to live, go on vacation, work or what sports or hobbies are enjoyed. Symptoms may include excessive sweating or clamminess, rapid breathing, rapid heartbeat, nausea and dizziness.

Often this fear is caused by an incident earlier in life which was frightening. People sometimes have the misconception that such a frightening event would have to be a long-lasting or memorable ordeal. Many people don't even remember the events which led to their phobia. The mind can create a phobia based on an instant of panic.

Evolution. You were on a tree having coconuts for breakfast. And last thing you needed was to share with spiders or any animals. So mother nature helped you freak out and you carried this over to the next generation.

Seriously, not everyone is scared of spiders. Some males are not at all. But every huan being in the world has some fear anyway.

This is just my own opinion. I think it has a lot to do with how you were raised. I was raised in the country where spiders were a natural part of everyday life so I've personally never "feared" them.

However, a lot of my friends have a huge fear when it comes to spiders because they don't see them too often.

Kind of like a fear of snakes. There are some parts of the world where children sleep with snakes and don't think anything of it.

I believe it is all part of your environment and nothing genetically proned to make one human fear a roach or a spider and another human be fearless of the critters.

Its all to do with evolution. In history spiders posed a threat as they could kill you (like snakes, rats, etc). So people have evolved to be scared of spiders, even though most spiders are harmless. Obviously not everyone is scared of spiders as it is possible to overcome this phobia

Because a lot of spiders are known to carry venom and most people can't tell the difference from a non-venomous spider to a venomous one.

Anything with multiple legs is scary, even though not all spiders are venomous they do have painful bites and some do make you sick. Your body is trying to avoid a painful situation so you move away fast or just kill it!

humans have natural fear with spiders because when they see one they start to freak out when they see any kind of spider.

Because of all of the horror stories and movies.
We've built up this fear from horror movies and stuff.
So, I'm assuming that something is instilled in our brains.
(That spiders are scary.)
Even though we know that there are no 16-foot-tall spiders...
We still remember them from the movies.
And, a little bit of that fear is still left in us.
(That's what I'm assuming.)
